Why Doctors Trust The Wrong Lab Work When It Comes To Thyroid And Weight Loss
The Does this sound like you and your weight loss? “Okay if my thyroid isn’t stopping me from losing weight then what is?” Sarah asked. Her doctor gave her the standard answer about getting older shrugging his shoulders as he walked out of the room saying he’d see her in a year.
She didn’t buy it, and neither do I.
Why Doctors Trust The Wrong Lab Work
Doctors trust the wrong lab work in my opinion. More importantly, they trust the ranges for ‘normal’ that are standard of disease, not wellness. Lastly, some doctors are still listening to outdated information.
Many medical doctors will do blood work for TSH or thyroid-stimulating hormone. The pituitary gland is the director that talks to the thyroid gland about production of TSH. It’s the signal that’s sent to the thyroid gland to tell it how much thyroid hormone to produce.
Your Thyroid And Weight Loss
For many years this one test was believed to be the answer to finding out if your thyroid was working correctly. The initial study to determine the range for TSH were done in the Nurses’ Health Study. That was over 20 years ago, and today there are many more studies that show us we need to go further when looking at how the thyroid and the Pituitary gland are functioning.
Doctors are getting the message that they need to do more specific lab-work. Some will also test your T4 levels. Great! Neither TSH or T4 show the entire picture of how our thyroid is working and if your thyroid gland could keep you from losing weight.
What we know about losing weight is that your thyroid plays a large part. If it is not working, you’ll have trouble maintaining a healthy weight. Proper testing is key. The treatment is simple and natural. Let’s keep talking about your problem – losing weight.
Your Thyroid And You
Recent studies indicate the old range for TSH was incorrect. Many people in the Nurses’ Study had hypothyroid or low thyroid function. A ‘normal range is more 0.5 to 2 or 2.5. Any health coaching client or local in-office patient I see with a TSH, not in this range I want to know why and you should too!
Hypothyroidism does slow your metabolism and makes it very hard to lose weight if not impossible. For many women over 40, a TSH reading of 3.0 or 3.5 means their thyroid needs help.
We put our thyroid to the test in the western culture. TSH is sent from the pituitary gland. Its part of a process in the body called the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis is our central stress hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis is our central stress response system response system.
If the pituitary is stressed out or the adrenals overworked the whole internal mechanics get funky. Then weight loss tanks and so does your energy.
